Graven - Valley Theory Tour

Growing up, Graven frontman Matt McKechnie was a massive listener of J Mascis (Dinosaur Jr.), Stephen Malkmus (Pavement) and Led Zeppelin. Having played in garage bands since his mid-teens, he began to adapt and progress with the shifting musical terrain around him while still staying true to his idyllic influences.

With production and inspiration from folks like Charles Austin in Halifax (producer of Buck 65, Matt Mays, Joel Plaskett) and Dean Watson in Ottawa (producer of Meredith Luce, The Soiree, The Murder Plans), Graven is ready to hit the streets and rumble for the good of soul-singers everywhere.

This past summer of 2009, Graven toured on their latest Ottawa-recorded and acclaimed EP Valley Theory. The title of the album symbolizes leaving old familiar terrain (the 'valley') for new adventures. Having limited time and an even more limited budget, Matt & gang recorded the 5 songs of the EP in about 8 hours in May with the help of sound guru Dean Watson (Gallery Recording Studios in Ottawa).

Sometimes changing all of the players (save for Matt himself) depending on the sound, Graven crosses between folk, power pop, hard rock, countrified cottage music and alternative country. Matt McKechnie’s songwriting style cannot be pinned down. The album also allowed Matt to finally showcase his irreplaceable and talented band of musicians -- Rehuel Ernest, Paul Godin, Owen Edwards and Landon Kotchapaw.

The older, re-vamped track 1 'Northglow' was one of Matt's first Graven creations and was roughly recorded in 2002; it was also recently featured on Zunior.com mixtape. The highly anthemic 'I Speak Your Sadness' garnered Graven considerable attention as it centered around the story of one of Matt's musical idols - Halifax native Matt Murphy (of Flashing Lights & Super Friendz).

The song speaks about Matt Murphy's surreal stage presence and musicianship. McKechnie actually convinced Murphy to attend their show at the Horseshoe Tavern back in June where they were able to chat for a few minutes - Murphy later wrote McKechnie a message saying 'Great set! I ESPECIALLY loved the song about me!'

The album then takes a fictional turn as 'Golden Garage' delves deeper into contemplation as we learn of another musical character who has traded artistic success for commercial fame. 'Harsh' then depicts the near collapse of the singer who wants nothing more than to leave his town while the uppity twang of 'Country Stars' might have introduced the singer to a new reason to stick around.

Check out Matt and the good ship Graven as they hit the waters of the east coast for a stripped-down, 3-night-stand at The Carleton in Halifax while sprinkling in a few dates across Ontario for good measure.

Library Voices - New Album Details & Tour Dates

Library Voices, an eight-piece pop collective from Regina, Saskatchewan released their EP, Hunting Ghosts (& Other Collected Shorts) on Young Soul Records in 2008. It landed them square in the crosshairs of SPIN’s music radar, who proclaimed Library Voices the “undiscovered band you NEED to hear now.” They have been featured in The New Yorker. They’ve received generous airplay on the CBC and BBC. They have won a CBC Radio 3 “Bucky” Award. They’ve been mugged twice and had their van robbed once.

Now Denim on Denim, the debut album from Library Voices will be released on April 13, 2010(Young Soul Records /EMI). Young Soul Records is the most recent label to join a decorated EMI Label Services roster alongside the likes of: Arts & Crafts, Hidden Pony, Secret City, Ultra Records, Century Media and Side One Dummy - all utilizing EMI Music Canada’s distribution and services reach.

Denim on Denim was (painstakingly) recorded in Regina in the back of a local dance studio. Staying true to their objective of documenting spacious and concise pop songs meant omitting dozens of ideas and tracks from the final mixes. Yet, the record is still teeming with instrumentation - guitars and keys, horns and synths, and (of course) the occasional feedback loop. Denim on Denim was produced by Library Voices and Orion Paradis and features guest appearances from co-prairie musicians and friends in Woodpigeon, Rah Rah, Sylvie, Northcote, as well as Andy Shauf. Right down to the die-cut album packaging - the exterior cut-away lightening bolt revealing the denim inner sleeve, demonstrates the attention to detail that extends to every corner of their work.

As with their previous EP, Denim On Denim is rich with cultural reference. Stan Getz and Fyodor Dostoevsky make cameos in songs about late night escapades. Similarly, Haruki Murakami, Charles Bukowski, Dennis Wilson, and Gram Parsons (among others) weave their way through tales of indulgence, promiscuity, modern living, and the forthcoming apocalypse. This is feel good music for an audience with a conscience (albeit likely, a guilty one). Lead single from Denim on Denim - Drinking Games is available at
 http://www.myspace.com/thelibraryvoices

The bands unabashed celebration of the term 'pop music' has at times, been met by confusion, leading some to expect bubble gum or auto-tuned FM shine. Although apologetic for the misunderstanding the band stands behind the term. They could have called it, “Post-Twee-Power-Folk-Nu-Beach-LoFi-Modern-Indie”- but they didn't. It's pop. Just pop. You know, like The Stranger, The Zombies, and Videodrome.

Library Voices
will be playing live in B.C. over the Olympics and will be on correspondent duty for Regina local Radio 1 reporting on the Olympic experience. Olympic performance dates for Library Voices are outlined below. Subsequent details on their upcoming library and national venue tours in support of Denim on Denim will be announced soon.

Spotlight: Woodhands

One of the country's top electro bands, Woodhands, a duo made up of Dan Werb (vocals, synths) and Paul Banwatt (drums, live vocals), released a new album this past Tuesday. Remorsecapade is a follow-up to 2008's explosive Heart Attack, which led to tours in Asia, the US, and here in Canada. This new release keeps the band rocking the keytar, pounding out the dance hits, and exploring its emotional baggage.

To celebrate the release and help get the word out, the band hosted a secret, invite-only show Thursday night at Toronto's not-spacious Smiling Buddha bar. Slightly north and west of the usual hotspots, and often playing host to bands even I've never heard of, I admit to not having ventured there before. I got there early, and spent a quick hour and a quarter talking with an assortment of local press-types and friends of the band. At around 10:30pm, a smoke machine and two green lasers having created somewhat of a proper vibe, and with photographers assembled at the front, the band started to play. And then quickly stopped. Aw, Woodhands. The technical issues were almost instantly sorted out, and the show really got started. The band performed a few of the songs off Remorsecapade, brought Maylee Todd on to contribute her part to "Dissembler" and "Dancer" from Heart Attack, then seamlessly transitioned into "Coolchanize," the standout track from the new album. The performance wasn't quite the display of musical wizardry I've seen from this band, but that's hardly the point. Experiencing these songs---also "CP24," "Talk," and "I Should Have Gone With My Friends,"---performed live makes me excited for everyone who'll get a chance to see this band on their upcoming tour. And, as a friend of mine told Paul after the set, it was just fun to see them play in a small venue just like the old days. (Read more about that here.)

Remorsecapade is the band's second full-length album. Like the first, it offers up eminently danceable tracks and much artistic interest. Electro isn't usually this smart and fully danceable. The best track, "Coolchazine," grabbed my attention right away. Some of the others took a few listens, but by now I'm quite taken with the record.

The first track, "Pockets," sets the tone, and assures the listener that all the ingredients that made Heart Attack great are still present. Slow builds and quiet moments compete with pounding beats and aborted symbol crashes. The song's both groovy and meaningful. It's a love song, after all. "Talk," next up, is about a girl, too. It has dance hit written all over it, but the angst-ridden, yearning kind, not the bubble-gum version. "CP24" you've all heard (and seen). Here the angst gets aggressive and embittered. "Sluts"---which I just noticed begins with a technical glitch and Dan swearing "fuck this machine"---has a more dance club vibe. The girl problems continue, but there's a resolution. What begins aggressively ends with a much more healthy attitude. Awesome. And then comes "Coolchanize." As Dan himself might say, "Oh shit!" Screams! Grunts! This song takes me through the ringer. Dan---or the man he's singing about---has been done wrong. "Why are you fucking with my focus? Why do you have to be the closest thing to me?" and etc. The man can't get a break, though, deciding next that "I Should Have Gone With My Friends" instead of following his date around. This is another great dance track. After all this "Dissembler" comes as a welcome reprieve. Maylee Todd, whose smooth vocal performance on "Dancer" added so much to the first record, is back, performing a duet on this one with Dan. Much airier, this pop love song is really lovely. Everyone now feeling better about things, it's time to dance (and scream) again. "When the Party is Over," featuring fat synth beats, under-emphasized drumming, and great singing, is another solid Woodhands song. The final track ("I Want To Be Together," followed by the outro "How To Survive A Remorsecapade"), is radically different in sound. It's slower, contemplative, sad---"I want to be together" is the repeated refrain---but also a smart way to end a record that's full of anger and heartbreak and other emotional struggles. A "remorsecapade" indeed.

Download: "Pockets" (Remorsecapade, 2010).
Download: "I Kissed A Girl (Katy Perry cover)" (unreleased, 2009).
Download: "Dancer" (Heart Attack, 2008).
Download: "I Wasn't Made For Fighting" (Heart Attack, 2008).

And the live version:

Pick up a copy of Remorsecapade at your local record store, or order it through Paper Bag Records (or whatever other online retailer you like). You can also get both full-length records on vinyl from Paper Bag, as well as some digital-only releases, including last year's Dancer EP, a must-have for DJs or dance-party hosts.

The band is playing shows throughout Canada, February through April. Go see them if you're able!

Laura Barrett Touring with Magnetic Fields this Winter

Earlier this week Justin told you about Laura Barrett's new video for "The Wood Between Worlds." Now there's more good news to share about this emerging Canadian artist... she'll be opening for the Magnetic Fields on a handful of dates in February and March! How exciting. Or, as Laura tweeted yesterday: "!!!!! opening for the Magnetic Fields in Feb and March!!!!! !!!! All I can do is exclaim!!!!"

Laura Barrett is based in Toronto. Her current project has her performing on a variety of kalimbas, a traditional African instrument (more commonly known as the thumb piano) and bass pedals. She often appears solo, but her last album---Victory Garden (Paper Bag Records, 2008)---also featured friends playing flute, bassoon, oboe, violin, and other instruments. Laura's understated charm and sense of humour can make her live shows a mesmerizing experience. Here's hoping Magnetic Fields' audiences sit still and come to love her as many of us here in Canada already do.

In its near-decade of existence, Thrush Hermit evolved from suburban East Coast teenagers churning out hyperactive inside-joke noise to one of Canada’s most beloved rock bands. Always valuing camaraderie over careerism, Joel Plaskett, Rob Benvie, Ian McGettigan, and Cliff Gibb will briefly reunite for a string of shows in March 2010, a stint that promises to be a meltdown of nostalgia, thrills, and proof that the Hermit can still help the masses Learn to Party.

The Wooden Sky : Cross-Canada Tour Dates

The Wooden Sky is the sound of collective will; a group of individuals coming together to forge something bigger. With a new record and new friends to help them play it, the Wooden Sky are poised to push “folk rock” into something new, exciting, and earnest. And they're aiming to spread their 'don't call it alt-country' sounds across Canada by touring through central Canada on their way to performing at the Vancouver Olympics in February. And really, I dare to to listen to the immensely addictive and satisfying single "Oh My God (It Still Means A Lot To Me)" without humming the refrain for the remainder of the day.

After a VERY successful 2009 that included the release of the critically acclaimed If I Don't Come Home, You'll Know I'm Gone, a cross-Canada Bedrooms and Backstreets alternative spaces tour, a North American tour with Elliott Brood, and 'A Documentary in Pieces', a series of short films documenting their aforementioned B&B tour, the band has no intention of letting up in 2010. Their latest release topped numerous 'best of 2009' lists, which will hopefully keep them warm as the trek across the snowy terrain of the North. The tour starts January 22nd in Kingston at the Grad Club, heads out east, and then cuts all the way Nationwide and wraps up at the Olympic Village in Vancouver on February 25th.

Tour Dates:

Jan 22 - Kingston, ON @ The Grad Club

Jan 26 - Charlottetown, PEI @ Baba's Lounge
Jan 27 - Halifax, NS @ Company House (In The Dead Of Winter Festival)

Album Title Curses The Dudes - "Blood, Guts, Bruises, Cuts"

What they say must be true, as after The Dudes released their album titled Bloods, Guts, Bruises, Cuts earlier this year the band (and others involved in the making and development of it) has suffered nothing but.  Take for example their photographer Randy who took shots for the album and next thing you know he falls into a parked car and needs staples in his head.  Or Megan who shows up at the shooting for the video ‘Girl Police’ and breaks her ankle within the hour.

None compares, however, to the injuries that the band themselves have sustained.  Two days before heading out on tour lead singer/guitarist Dan Vacon’s white BMX took him down the highway of hurt resulting in 12 staples to the head and a broken collarbone.  A month later drummer Scott Ross borrows and bails on the same bike to end up missing 3 of his front teeth, a bunch of his face, and a piece of his moustache.  Witnesses say he got up swinging like he was in a fight.  Eerily enough it was the same intersection in Calgary where both accidents happened.

Most recently Vacon crashed into a tree skiing at Lake Louise and broke the other side of his collarbone.  Again two days before leaving out on tour.  Last week the band got caught in a blizzard and while hailing a cab Ross slipped and got dragged 30 feet underneath the bumper of an oncoming car.  With both knees busted, Scott can’t yet walk but still somehow manages to rock.

Blood, Guts, Bruises, Cuts?  Exactly.  Don’t be surprised if their next album foresees the title Millions Sold, Millions Made.

Nominated for a CBC Radio 3 Bucky Award for their offstage antics and voted Calgary’s favourite band for the last 4 years, FFWD Weekly calls them “a rock band capable of taking on the world at large.”  These guys rock as hard as their injuries do.  Catch The Dudes bloodied, gutted, bruised, and cut on their remaining tour dates.

Basia Bulat Tour Dates (plus a podcast and an old bootleg)

Basia Bulat's highly anticipated sophomore album Heart of My Own is coming early in 2010 (January 26). There are only two live dates scheduled before that in Montreal on December 16 and Toronto on January 16 but starting in February she is crossing the country - from Kingston Ontario to Halifax and then back west until Vancouver. Interestingly, most of the dates are either in churches or cultural centres and not in bars and pubs anymore (with a few exceptions - Hamilton, Orillia, Saskatoon and Edmonton).

The first single "Gold Rush" is now on iTunes. You can find more info about the full album, and pre-order it at Secret City Records.

If you've somehow missed it grab Basia's special edition Radio 3 Podcast. You can also grab this free 2005 recording of Basia from Zeke's Gallery!

Tour Dates:
December 16 – Montreal, QC – Metropolis Theatre (with Patrick Watson)
January 16 – Toronto, ON – Trinity St.Paul’s United Church
February 2 – Kingston, ON – Sydenham Street United Church
February 4 – London, On – The Aeolian Performing Arts

Free Double Album & New Video from Brian Borcherdt

Yesterday I posted an interview between Rebekah Higgs and Brian Borcherdt (the last third of Higgs' Tuesday Afternoon radio show on CKDU). In it Borcherdt lays out the long tale of how his new album Torches came to be.

It seems, at one point, Borcherdt lost a large collection of recordings and demos in a cab. Having rediscovered some of them and not wanting to take a chance on them being lost forever again he put some finishing touches on them and is giving them to you along with the Ward Colorado demos. Because releasing a double album just isn't enough for Brian for a Wednesday he also has a new video (see below) and is out on an Eastern tour with the spectacularly talented Julie Fader starting tomorrow. (see tour dates below the video).

Hot Panda Changes Bass Players

Edmonton's Hot Panda announced a change in personnel today on their Myspace Blog:
"Today is the end of an era for us pandas. Sadly we had to part ways with our bass player Keith Olsen who left for personal reasons. He will be really truly missed by all of us.

However, today is also the start of a new era- Hot Panda is pleased, very pleased, actually, to welcome Catherine Hiltz into the fold- a new Panda! You may have seen Catherine playing trumpets with us at various shows around Canada- well, now she's our bass player!

The future is wide open!

until next time,
xHP"
The bands debut LP Volcano...Bloody Volcano was released in February of last year to rave reviews and my sources at Mint Records are telling me that the stuff they are prepping for the follow up is going to be even better. You might get a chance to hear some of it if you catch them at the Biltmore in Vancouver on December 4 or at Logan's in Victoria on December 5th.

Sing Along with Justin Rutledge - Now on Tour

I have to back up a minute. A little while ago I published the first of our Sing Along posts, designed to help you enjoy live shows a little more by teaching you the words to a song or two so you could sing along (vocally or mentally). That one was for the Rural Alberta Advantage who kick off their tour in Hamilton tonight but the whole idea for it was spawned by Justin Rutledge (without his knowledge). His song "Don't Be So Mean Jellybean" was designed for sing-along. I don't even think there is a studio version of it. It just wouldn't be the same and it's about the easiest song in the world to learn and sing along with (Justin will even prompt you). Justin is also playing a few dates out west before coming home for a few dates in Ontario so, learn the song, go to the shows (dates are at the bottom of the page).

First hit play (you can download the song via It's Not the Band I Hate, It's Their Fans recorded live at the Cameron house).

Now Sing:

"Don't you be so mean
My jellybean
My Boston cream

Don't you be so mean
My beauty queen
My movie screen

Slow landlord be slow
(repeat)
Where my money goes
(repeat)
Man I don't know
(repeat)

Slow landlord be slow
(repeat)
Where our money goes
(repeat)
Hell we don't know
(repeat)

She's the girl for me
(repeat)
She brings me seeds
(repeat)
From olive trees
(repeat)

She's the girl for me
(repeat)
Half make believe
(repeat)
I'm half asleep
(repeat)

Blow November Blow
(repeat)
My Sweetheart Home
(repeat)
Before the Snow
(repeat)

Blow November blow
(repeat)
My sweetheart home
(repeat)
Before the snow
(repeat)

Don't you be so mean
(repeat)
My beauty queen
(repeat)
My movie screen
(repeat)

Don't you be so mean
(repeat)
My jellybean
(repeat)
My Boston cream
(repeat)"
"

Got it? Cool - now try again a little faster:

Told you it was easy!

Go see Justin with the lovely and talented Melissa McClelland at:
VANCOUVER, BC: East Cultural Centre, Nov 11 w/Melissa McClelland

CALGARY, AB: Central United Church, Nov 13 w/Melissa McClelland

EDMONTON, AB: McDougall United Church, Nov 14 w/Melissa McClelland

Sing Along with the Rural Alberta Advantage: Tour Starts Tonight

The Rural Alberta Advantage who were recently voted the hottest band in Canada are kicking off their Fall North American Tour tonight in Hamilton at the Casbah. The tour will take them through Ontario and Quebec, down through the Central United States, then through the South West, up into the Pacific North West, then out east for a couple of dates in New York before they finish up in Vancouver. For a full list of tour dates see the bottom of this post. Before I get there though I'm going to try something new. I've always thought that live shows are more enjoyable if you know the words to the songs - even just a few of them. Some people like to sing along, others don't but even if you're in the latter category you still like singing along in your head (don't even bother denying it.) So, in order to help you enjoy the show more - this is the first installment of our sing-along series: Click play and then scroll down.

The Rural Alberta Advantage – Don’t Haunt This Place

Don’t haunt this heart,
Don’t haunt this place,
Your heart beating slow as it beats out a pace,
West side apartment grows lonely and dark,
West side apartment is two more empty hearts.

I see your keys hanging in the same place,
They haven’t moved for a month or even a day,
This was hard it was fun,
We should do it again,
Give ourselves some time,
Ten years for the day.

I need you now,
I need you then,
I never want to feel this again,
Separate the room with painful divides,
Until there’s nothing left to remind.

Never want to see you again,
I never want to feel this again,
Turn off the locks,
All the pitfalls night,
‘Till I find something you left behind.

And the things we never had,
And the things we wish would come back,
Because we need this oh so bad,
Because we need this oh so bad.

And we tremble in the night,
For the things we’re wishing were right,
Because we need this oh so bad,
Because I need you oh so bad.

Don’t haunt this heart,
Don’t haunt this place,
Your heart beating slow as it beats out a pace,
West side apartment grows lonely and dark,
West side apartment is two more empty hearts.

I want to hurt,
I want to betray,
It’s not like me to make your heart break,
This was hard it was fun we should do it again,
Give ourselves some time ten years for the day.

And the things we never had,
And the things we wish would come back,
Because we need this oh so bad,
Because we need this oh so bad.

And we tremble in the night,
For the things we’re wishing were right,
Because we need this oh so bad,
Because I need you oh so bad.

Don’t haunt this heart,
Don’t haunt this place,
Your heart beating slow as it beats out a pace,
West side apartment grows lonely and dark,
West side apartment is two more empty hearts.

I know it’s right I know it’s okay,
And I’d like to see you now and again,
This was hard it was dumb we should do it again,
Give ourselves some time ten years from the day

Royal Wood & Rose Cousins Western Canadian Tour

Toronto-based singer-songwriter Royal Wood is currently on a cross-Canada tour and will touch down on the west coast mid-November. He is being supported by Rose Cousins, who's currently promoting her new record named The Send Off.

Royal Wood has been compared to the likes of Ron Sexsmith, the Beatles to Rufus Wainwright, and is hailed for his prowess as a multi-instrumentalist, vocal styling and catchy lyrics. In his previous albums, Wood had enlisted the help of fellow artists such as Hawksley Workman, In-Flight Safety and Valery Gore.

Rose Cousins, recently known for her vocals in Joel Plaskett's Polaris short-listed Three, is a well-established Atlantic Canadian singer-songwriter in her own right. With 5 albums under her belt, her warm and clear voice can also be found on albums of other Canadian artists like Jenn Grant, Old Man Leudecke, Matt Mays and Jill Barber.

If you're not completely convinced to go to the shows by these artists' accolades alone, take a listen to their respective albums streaming on their websites. Royal Wood here, and Rose Cousins here (player at bottom). You can also check out their Myspace:

Blue Rodeo (and Guests) Street Party & Rooftop Show to Launch Album and Tour

I found out originally from Chartattack that Blue Rodeo is hosting a street party and rooftop show at 2:30 on Tuesday afternoon (Nov. 10) at the Diesel Playhouse (55 Blue Jays Way). I've asked around a bit since then and a little bird told me that Blue Rodeo will be joined for that show by Julie Fader and Cuff the Duke's Wayne Petti. So if you're anywhere near downtown Toronto tuesday might be a good day to take a late lunch, or just call in sick and make a day of it. How many more opportunities like this will you get before the snow comes?

The reason, of course, for the show is the new album. According to that Chartattack post:
"Things We Left Behind, out the same day, is Blue Rodeo's 12th studio album and features 16 new tracks spanning two discs. The album will be available in a number of different formats, including two CDs, double vinyl and a special iTunes LP. A digital package will also be available. It will include: interactive album notes, exclusive photos of the band and portraits of their most prized instruments, a song by song commentary from Jim Cuddy and Greg Keelor and a special acoustic performance of four new songs from the album."
After Tuesday you can see Blue Rodeo at:

Julie Doiron Tour Dates (Europe, US & Canada)

The winner of NxEW's 2009 Shadow Polaris voting - Julie Doiron is on tour pretty much from now until February. (She's taking a few weeks off for the holidays - she's a tireless performer but not a masochist). Sadly , for us most of those dates are not in Canada, happily for her many of those dates are in places that are warm this time of year - but the dates take her through Europe, the Southern and Southwestern US, and west/west central Canada. Now that our traffic is up sharply in the US and the rest of the world - I'll try to do a better job of posting international tour dates.

Get out there and show Julie some love rest of the world.

Royal is asking that you get in touch if you can help our. You can find the appropriate email addys here or drop an email to [email protected] and I'll pass it along.

Ticket Giveaway: You Say Party! We Say Die! @ The Phoenix, Toronto, 20 Nov.

My two favourite musical genres are folk and electro, or, more specifically, electro-pop and folk-rock. The last contest I brought you was folk and pop and quieter stuff, so it's only fitting that now I've got one that showcases my love of dancing (awkwardly).

Vancouver band You Say Party! We Say Die! are on tour, promoting their new album, XXXX. The first and only time I saw this band was during this year's NxNE festival at the El Mocambo. Though festival showcases aren't always the best measure of a band's performance prowess, YSP!WSD! didn't tone things down. Front-woman Becky Ninkovic is a serious presence on stage (and great vocalist), and the band's songs are catchy and danceable without being overly produced or all about the 80s.

YSP!WSD! are coming to Toronto on 20 November. They're bringing Montrealers Think About Life and Torontonians---and YSP!WSD! label-mates---Little Girls with them. (The inclusion of the Slim Twig-ish Little Girls means this is certainly not a standard dance band bill.)

Download: Little Girls, "Youth Tunes," (Concepts, 2009).
Download: Think About Life, "Set You On Fire" (Family, 2009).
Download: You Say Party! We Say Die!, "Laura Palmer's Prom" (XXXX, 2009).

Courtesy the MuseBox, I've got a pair of tickets to give away to this show! So, if you're 19+, going to be in Toronto that night, and want to party it up good, send me an email (historyjenATgmailDOTcom) with your full name in the body and "YSP!WSD!" in the subject line. Get that into me by 11:59pm on Monday, 16 November, and I'll let you know if you're a winner the next day.

Fine print: Steam Whistle presents You Say Party! We Say Die!, Think About Life, and Little Girls, w/ DJ Vaneska @ The Phoenix, Friday, 20 November, 9pm, $12 (adv).

Here's the remaining YSP!WSD! tour schedule:

Nov 05 – Sherbrooke, QC – Le Telephone Rouge
    Nov 06 – Laval, QC – Le Trac *
    Nov 07 – Montreal, QC – Il Motore *

New (Free) Mixtape From Slim Twig (+ Tour Dates)

Slim Twig is off on tour in about a week, to celebrate he's posted Spit It Twig! Volume 2 According to Twig:
"Spit It Twig Vol. 2 represents my commitment to the free mixtape format I admire so much in artists like Lil Wayne & the Clipse. This time I decided to stretch out my repertoire in directions both more overtly hip hop ('This Night's Untold' & 'More Mercy, Miss Percy'), and even more abstract ('The Pink Room', 'Perfect Pitch'). This mix also features more collaboration than any of my other releases with contributions from Dirty Beaches, Onakabazien, D-Sisive and a (one-sided-career-fullfilling) collab with David Lynch. The diversity of Spit It Twig Vol. 2 was meant to reveal my intention & future direction with tapes which is to periodically expose experiments, and spontaneous ideas to those who are curious... all for a great price. -ST"

Ticket / CD Giveaway: The Wooden Sky @ Lee's Palace, 13 Nov.

One of the country's top folk rock bands, the Wooden Sky, released their sophomore full-length album---If I Don't Come Home You'll Know I'm Gone---this summer. (I liked it; still do.) To celebrate the release, the men went on the road, playing backyards, living rooms, rooftops, and other alternative spaces. Filmmaker Scott Cudmore went with them:

(Part 2 of the documentary is up here, and look for parts 3 and 4 later this month.)

Although the summer tour was fantastic for the bands and fans alike, and no doubt made every performance special in ways regular shows just can't be, it meant that fewer people could see the band perform than if they'd played in larger, more public venues. And that, I presume, is what this current tour is all about.

Torontonians can get their Wooden Sky fix on Friday, Nov 13 at Lee's Palace. They're bringing along local popsters Hooded Fang and the decidedly un-popy Brian Borcherdt, whose solo project bears little resemblance to his other musical endeavour, Holy Fuck. Each one of these acts alone would be enough to get me out of my pyjamas on a rainy night. In other words, good lineup. And now, thanks to me (read: not me), you can go to the show for free!

Courtesy the Musebox I've got two tickets and a copy of If I Don't Come Home You'll Know I'm Gone on CD to give away to one lucky 19+, Toronto-residing reader. Want in on this? Want in on this? Email me (historyjenATgmailDOTcom) your full name by 11:59pm on Tuesday, 10 Nov. I'll draw a random name and let you know if you're a winner the next day.

Download: The Wooden Sky, "Oh My God (It Still Means A Lot To Me)" (If I Don't Come Home You'll Know I'm Gone, 2009).
Download: Hooded Fang, "Fall Leaves" (Hooded Fang, 2008).
Download: Brian Borcherdt, "Scout Leader" (Coyotes, 2008).

Fine print: The Wooden Sky, Hooded Fang, and Brian Borcherdt @ Lee's Palace, Friday, 13 November, 9pm, $12.50 (adv, $15 at the door).

    -----

The Wooden Sky will be hitting up other towns in Ontario and Quebec this month. Be sure to go early for Evening Hymns' set. He---Jonas Bonnetta, that is---has a new record out himself. I think you'll like it, too.

New Video: Dan Mangan - Robots

Dan Mangan has just finished kicking but on tour across the country and is now headed for an international tour that will take him to Dubai and through the UK and Europe. If you're in any of these places or are planning to be see the tour dates below the video. A few nice things said about Dan while he was crossing the country:
“Stealing his title from a poem in the classic Kurt Vonnegut novel Cat’s Cradle, Dan Mangan has crafted a near-perfect indie rock album. Simple yet varied, each of these 12 songs could easily stand alone as a sparkling single. If you think that I’m overenthusiastic about this album, try listening to the chorus of “Robots” without singing along: “Robots need love too!” Go on, I dare you! See Magazine

“Mangan has a sharp, observational eye and if he chose to, could probably deliver it with just as sharp a tongue but there’s no mistaking the genuine affection for the characters that inhabit his songs, rich with both humour and sadness. It’s the same sort of gift that John K Samson possesses and while Mangan prefers a more rootsy vehicle for his tunes, Weakerthans comparisons are not out of line and should be taken as compliments. It was obvious that Mangan has already built himself a sizable fanbase, but there was also a sense that this show was catching him on the cusp of bigger things – at least if Very Nice gets the attention it deserves.” Chromewaves

"...Knocks you flat on your ass... Mangan's career is clearly on the rise. Hop on board and enjoy the ride." - Exclaim!

"From his unusual and razor-sharp phrasing to the sage poetry in his everyday-life observations, he's in the ranks of geniuses such as Greg Brown, Nick Drake or Badly Drawn Boy." - The Province

"He's an observer in the sense you'd want to join him on a patio for a drink just to see the city through his eyes for an afternoon. Until then, Nice, Nice, Very Nice effectively lets you pretend for just over 40 mesmerizing minutes." – Chartattack

“Truly, Mangan's baladeering, his excellent construct, his permeating, poetically-phrased observations would be fantastic as is, but the fact that Mangan can insert his personality into the music makes it all the more appealing. There is grandeur to this music, effortless grandeur, and, what's more, it's as fun as it is challenging and interesting.” - Hour/Xpress

“ He caters skilfully both to the concrete and the abstract, concisely conveying his meanings by first painting a striking image of his surroundings, then following it by presenting an emotional or social situation. Material like his sophomore release, Nice, Nice, Very Nice, doesn't surface too often.” 30 Music

"It's hard to believe that this new collection of stellar songs won't help him leave each tour stop with countless new fans in his corner." – Herohill

“The obvious thing to say here is something along the lines of "Robots be damned, you're going to love Dan Mangan by the end of Nice, Nice, Very Nice." I can't think of any better way to close out this review, however, so just do yourself a favour and get this album, because it's so phenomenal that it's impossible to resist.” iheartmusic

"With some of his strongest work to date and an already large fan-base, Nice, Nice, Very Nice could very well be the album that solidifies Mangan as the standout artist he is." –Discorder

"Ultimately, it's that ability to write lyrics that beg for some consideration of their meanings" - Vue Weekly

"If you like The Weakerthans or early Hawskley Workman, you'll love this record. It's all well crafted singer-songwriter stuff with impressive range." –Metro

"Listeners wouldn't expect the cheeky content to sail through waves of dynamic choral balladeering and colourful instrumentation, but Mangan doesn't only pull it off, he makes it soar." – SoundProof Magazine
I couldn't agree more - with all of it. Here's the video - directed by Mike Lewis and, if you don't already have it Grab an MP3 of Robots - Or even a copy of the video.

    New Superfantastics EP November 16

    Via altsounds:

On Edit: My apologies - it's been pointed out to me that this is a US re-release of a 2008 EP, sad for those of us who were hoping for new stuff - happy if you're in the UK and don't have it.

One of my favorite East Coast bands and two of the nicest people ever invented Matt Macdonald (also of Owl) and Steph D'entremont a.k.a. the Superfantastics are set to release a new EP on November 16. According to altsounds:
"‘Choose Your Destination’ is a hook-laden collection of melodically-charged tracks. On the EP, The Superfantastics have pushed pop music to its borders with each track, delivering hook after hook through a mesh of synths, fuzz soaked guitars and pounding beats. From the Chet Atkins inspired riff in “Lullaby Punches” to the Superchunk snarl of “The Astronomer,” the band has moved past the obvious to produce a unique set of songs that matches simple ideas with a maintained chaos.
You can catch the Superfantastics live in Yarmouth, NS on November 6 at The Rodd Grand Yarmouth or if you're in England you can catch their worldwide tour of London (and hopefully grab the EP from the merch table) at:
"13 Nov The Hope and Anchor, London
15 Nov Tasty Fanzine night @ The Legion, London
17 Nov Club Fandango @ Buffalo Bar, London
18 Nov The Flower Pot, London
19 Nov eARmusic @ Monkey Chews, London
    20 Nov The Windmill, Brix"

Review: The Diableros' new EP, Old Story, Fresh Road

Last Tuesday the band released a new 5-song EP, Old Story, Fresh Road, on 12" clear vinyl and digital download. (You can buy a copy of the former from the band at their shows or order it from their website.) The album was recorded with the help of Laurence Currie, who's produced Can-rock favourites like Sloan and Wintersleep. On Friday I went to see the band perform at the Boat in Toronto's Kensington Market. The show was a testament to the hard work and skill that goes into being one of the city's top lesser-known rock acts.

Ah, the Diableros. The band's 2007 album, Aren't Ready for the Country, was the first album I purchased from Zunior. I was also the first "indie" album I bought without ever having seen the band perform live. All this is the say that I knew then what I know now: this is a quality band.

I didn't actually get to see the Deebs until June 2008 when they performed a blistering set at the Silver Dollar during NxNE. By then the group that recorded the 2007 full-length and the 2005 debut (You Can't Break the Strings In Our Olympic Hearts) had changed considerably, personnel-wise. Now, the 5-piece includes only two original members: singer, guitarist, and lead song-writer Pete Carmicheal, and guitarist Ian Jackson. The lineup's filled out by three former Postage Stamps' members, namely, bassist Keith Hamilton, organ-player Jordan Walsh, and drummer Mike Duffield. The new EP and the live show showcase a band that's both old and new, experienced but excited about what lays ahead, and poised to win over a whole lot of new fans. But don't take my word for it. There are no throw-away tracks here. Awesome stuff. Most of the songs on the EP feature what I think of as the Diableros' signature rock sound, but with stronger vocals than I would have imagined. I'm loving the loud organ, fast-paced drumming, great guitar lines, and, well, everything. Here's my current favourite:

Download: The Diableros, "Heavy Hands" (Old Story, Fresh Road, 2009).

Here's where you can catch the Diableros over the next little while:

    Sunday, Oct 18 2009, Montreal, Quebec @L’Esco Bar, 8pm
    Friday, Oct 23 2009,Windsor, Ontario @Phog Lounge, 9pm
    Saturday, Oct 24 2009,London, Ontario @Evac, 8pm
    Friday, Oct 30 2009,Ottawa, Ontario @Zaphod Beeblebrox, 8pm

Labels: free stuff, reviews, the diableros, Tour Dates, vinyl

    NxEW Spotlight: Great Lake Swimmers

The (Weekly) Artist Spotlight is a new thing at NxEW and there was considerable debate over who should go first. Ultimately the Great Lake Swimmers had the most support. It seems kind of a strange choice - most people already know and therefore love the Great Lake Swimmers. However, maybe that assumption is wrong. The Great Lake Swimmers have had a huge year very quietly. Their album Lost Channels got huge critical acclaim. They were shortlisted for the Polaris Music Prize and NxEW's Shadow Polaris Prize but ultimately took neither. They are now up for the Canadian Folk Music Award for Contemporary Album of the Year - So, while they've definitely gotten everyone's attention this year they don't seem to be making it to the top of the list, so perhaps just a little more attention is due.

See the bottom of this page for upcoming tour dates, but if you honestly don't know the Great Lake Swimmers or kinda know them but not really here are a few links to help build the bond:

New Do Make Say Think Next Week

Via Julie Penner: Do Make Say Think have a new album (Other Truths) coming and a new tour coming. If you don't already know the band, you should know that Do Make Say Think is not music, it's an event - live or recorded.

    Kinda like this:

Do Make Say Think - "Reitschule"

I haven't gotten to hear any of it yet but Chris Bilton at Eye Weekly has. Besides giving it 4 out of 5 he says
"Post-rock you can dance to might not necessarily be the best way to sum up Other Truths, Do Make Say Think’s sixth full-length, but it certainly hints at the celebratory grooves that open “Do” (the first of the album’s four tracks, which together form the band’s name). This song also epitomizes the band’s evolution from guitarchestral dirges and skittery ambience to melodies that are, if not instantly recognizable, then at least sneakily infectious."

Entire Cities Tour Dates (starting today)

Entire Cities are out wandering about (in a generally easterly direction. Today they emailed the following list of clues to help you find them:
Thurs the 15th of October (um, today) we're at the Mansion in Kingston with Bruce Peninsula, Share, and Ruben DeGroot.

Friday the 16th we're in Ottawa at the Rainbow Bistro in the Byward Market with this crazy Australian lapsteel Tom Waitsy guy named Mason Rack.

Saturday (the 17th, you get it) we're in Burnstown, ON (basically where I grew up) at the Neat Cafe with Bruce Peninsula.
Sunday we're in Sherbrooke with the Weather Station.

Monday we're in St. John New Brunswick with the Weather Station and the Bruce Peninsula. This is a house party, possibly my favourite ever. If you need to know how to get there, let me know.

Tuesday we're in Charlottetown at Cafe Ampersand. I think Andy Swan's gonna open, but we're not sure yet. He's the best.
We have nothing to do Wednesday or Thursday besides hang out at Halifax Pop Explosion and do homework. Not at the same time. Bruce Peninsula's playing Wednesday and the Weather Station is playing Thursday, so we'll probably be heckling them.

Friday we're playing at Gus' Pub for Halifax Pop with a bunch of awesome people like Forest City Lovers, First Aid Kit and Grass.

    Saturday we're playing in Sackville.

Sunday we're going to drive as fast as we can towards showers, beds, and our VHS collections.

the Handsome Furs Love Toronto (and are visiting Dec. 5)

The Handsome Furs have announced a Toronto show and more surprisingly they've announced that they secretly love the city. They are currently touring Europe and the UK but they announced today that they've added a December 5th show at Lee's Palace in Toronto to the schedule. On their Myspace the Furs said:
"HANDSOME FURS LOVE THIS CITY: TORONTO

    Hey Folks,
Happily we announce a December 5th gig at Lee's palace in the city we most love to pretend we hate. It's just the whole Montreal/Toronto rivalry thing that gets the crowds going in other cities. How else would we be able to relate to the Melbourne/Sydney or Beijing/Shanghai or Helsinki/Stockholm or Belgrade/Zagreb rifts that we come across?
We love playing Toronto so much and we hope to see you there. Seriously. I mean it. We love Toronto.
    Alexei

Will Currie and the Country French Touring in October (with Dan Mangan)

I've already posted Dan Mangan's Tour Dates with and without Will Currie and the Country French but I had to give Will and Co. their own post. It's a band I've been following (starting with the site publicbroadcasting.ca) for about three years now - back when they were a band I stumbled across on Myspace with a few songs up. I have heard their sound compared to Ben Folds and Elton John and have had a producer tell me that Will reminded him (in talent, knowledge and intensity if not style) of the Arcade Fire's Win Butler.

So, paired with XM Verge Artist of the Year Dan Mangan you can't go wrong. Here is the Facebook Event Page for the Will Currie and the Country French Dates.

    Everybody's Talking About Julie Fader

Back on Step. 3 I told you about Julie Fader's new album. I told you that I don't really do reviews - but that rather than take my word for the awesomeness of this album that "Sarah Harmer, Holy Fuck, the Great Lake Swimmers, Cuff the Duke, Bob Wiseman, Ron Sexsmith, Justin Rutledge, Matt Barber, Jill Barber, Dan Mangan, By Divine Right, A Northern Chorus, Chad Van Gaalen, Attack in Black, Hey Rosetta!, Apostle of Hustle and others will be in line to buy the album so, if the respect of other musicians, a whole lot of other musicians, means anything to you Outside In is an album that should be firmly on your radar." If you weren't convinced and wanted to wait for the word to come in from the people that do reviews the results are rolling in in a way that rarely happens for a first album in it's first month.

Julie has a great interview up on Blog T.O.
"I have never sought out or auditioned for a gig or anything. The people I play with at this point in my life are all people I love, and who I am a big fan of already. They asked, and I said yes."
and another one up on Maximum Fun:
"CB: After years of playing with bands your career is about to shift focus. How does working as a support player in a band compare to stepping out on your own?

JF: I thinks it’s equally as exciting and probably a lot more pressure on me, if I want to make it pressure. I don’t know. I’m not releasing a record so that people’s focus shifts on to me or anything. I’m releasing a record because I’ve been chipping away at it for quite some time, and it’s recorded, done, and there’s artwork for it. I don’t think it will be a huge difference. I think I have to relearn how to speak into a microphone, which is not really my favorite thing. One thing I really like as a support player is that I don’t have to say anything. I don’t have to explain how a song was written. I just have to do my thing."
And yet another one in Eye Weekly and another at the Text of Young America.

She has solid reviews in Herohill:
"For a debut record, the diversity and consistency she offers is surprising. You can't help but think some of producer/boyfriend Graham Walsh (Of Holy Fuck fame) influence helped shape the dynamic and powerful Skin and Bones, but even if you strip the songs down to her picked guitar and voice, the record never suffers from a lag or even a misstep. That's because Fader is so honest in her approach that even the saddest thoughts are given the gentlest, warmest touch to help them feel human, instead of cold, sterile and solitary."
Another in Quick Before it Melts:
"Outside In is the kind of album you swear you’ve heard somewhere else before. Like a city that’s instantly familiar even though you have never visited it before, Outside In induces déjà vu-like in the listener as they travel down musical routes that remind you of roads previously taken, like how “Skin and Bones” reminds me of Julie Doiron. But, where Julie F. and Julie D. differ is the path they choose to take: where Doiron’s songs are rickety, threadbare arrangements, Fader layers her songs like warm pullovers over plaid flannel shirts. With each new addition, the songs seem to radiate warmth and beg you to curl up with them and snuggle...I would hate for the public to dismiss this LP as being the product of Fader’s collaborations and guest performers, as opposed to being very much her own work. Sure, she’s got an impressive list of players, but that’s telling you just how highly regarded her own talent is. That familiarity I mentioned before? I think it comes from the strength and conviction Fader presents in these songs. She’s delivered a fully formed and mature sounding album, which seems to be very rare in debut albums these days. I’m loving this one."
    And Altsounds:
"OUTSIDE IN is a sonically gorgeous, multi-layered record full of warm textures and heartfelt sentiment. Julie Fader is here to tell you first hand that you are not alone."
Plus a few mentions at Exclaim, CBC Radio 3 and a nod on rhizomicon!

So, the early results are in and the verdict is pretty universal. Go get the album on Hand Drawn Dracula or Zunior or just pick it up at the merch table when you go see Julie on tour with Library Voices and In-Flight Safety.

    Sunparlour Players Hit the Road

The Sunparlour Players are one of the most infectious live bands in Canada. It's been suggested by some that it's engrossing, in part because of sheer talent but also because front man Andrew Penner expends so much energy and becomes so involved in his playing that it appears he might have some kind of attack and keel over at any moment - which makes people not want to turn away even briefly. Whatever the cause it's brilliant song-writing and musicianship and the show is going on the road!

    Upcoming Tour Dates:
Oct 1 TORONTO, ON Horseshoe Tavern
Oct 2 GUELPH, ON The Albion Hotel
    Oct 27 CHARLOTTETOWN, PEI Baba's

Tulpä to Reunite - Playing Peterborough, Hamilton & Toronto

Toronto 80s icon Tulpä are reuniting starting with a Peterborough Show on Oct. 1. Tulpä was from 1984 - 1987 a Toronto 'indie buzz band' but I'll let the band tell it in text and video:
"During the heydays of TULPÄ from 1984-87, the “Queen Scene” was a baby, still a scoop in the Toronto papers. Multiculturalism was well on its way, but people still thought of Toronto as a quaint WASP banking town. There was some interesting New Music being made and City TV was east of Yonge Street. Clubs were opening up, and artists and musicians had places to play. John Bottomley, Chris Bottomley, Sev Micron and a revolving cast of renegades were making music their way – loud and aggressive yet poignant and nuanced, and playing it in the midst of a crazy multimedia circus in the days when “multimedia” meant cameras, rulers, film, photocopiers and slide projectors. Larry’s Hideaway, Turning Point, The Diamond Club, The El Mocambo, Lee’s Palace, The Cabana Room, The Rivoli – then as now, sometimes the rooms were empty and sometimes you couldn’t move, especially when the likes of Living Colour were in the house. And then as now, independent-minded Canadians had to go abroad for their music to find an audience. Tulpa were known as a highly original band and were finding an audience internationally, including at New York’s seminal underground club CBGB. They signed to the club’s in-house label Off the Board Records, a year after releasing ”Mosaic Fish” in the UK on Midnight Music."

TULPA - 2nd interview on City tv's The New Music - "Initiation Rites" video

    Initiation Rites

    Passion

You can see Tulpä in Peterborough on Oct. 1 with the Staveley Project and Andrew McPherson at the Gordon Best Theatre, in Hamilton on Oct. 2 at This Ain't Hollywood and at the Supermarket in Toronto on October 8.

For more information on Tulpä visit the Facebook Event Page, the I Remember Tulpa Facebook Group or myspace.com/tulpamusic.

Concert Review - Hey Ocean! at Telus Studio Theatre

    Originally posted here.

Tonight (September 17), Hey Ocean! played at the Telus Studio Theatre at University of British Columbia's Chan Centre. The show was phenomenal as per usual. More polished than the 3-4 previous times I've seen them... as the set was being recorded by CBC Radio 2; The beautiful albeit somewhat formal setting of the theatre must've helped as well.

The mood was somewhat subdued compared to other shows of theirs. The amount of dancing was about 87.43% less (approximately) and the cat-calls as well. Except for of course, me, who should really be carted around from show to show to make loud noises when it is lacking.

David Beckingham, the guitarist, even mentioned that it was a huge change from playing bars on their tour, to a quiet (but really appreciative) audience in their hometown.

Ashleigh Ball was in top form tonight, lilting her playful voice high and low, spitting rhymes interspersed in their West Coast-inspired set harder, better, faster, stronger. (thought I'd use a more positive Kanye reference.) Her family was in the audience cheering her along, as well as at least one member of local band Said The Whale, whom can be expected to be at any given show in Vancouver.

Hey Ocean! played hits from both their debut Stop Looking Like Music and their sophomore album It's Easier To Be Somebody Else. Their set was also interspersed with new material for their upcoming album, which is still in the process of being written.

Particular favourites from the set for myself included Uh Oh, a new song which I've heard live a couple of times, which is a catchy tune that references hipsters and the infamous Adbusters article about them (or us?). 15 Words is great when Beckingham is sober enough to get the riff right, which was the case tonight. Bicycle is a stripped down little ditty about love and love lost. Beatboxer is always fun and infectious, and Jolene had fantastic harmonies. (Is this the same Jolene who also haunts Jeremy Fisher?)

Another point of note is the new drummer. They've got one, at least temporarily. The last time I spoke with bassist Dave Vertesi (also of local band Topless Gay Love Tekno Party) he had mentioned that this one has promise, and is currently their touring drummer. Unfortunately, I didn't catch his name, but he seemed quite in sync with the rest of the members. After showing off his chops in an extended drum solo, he also proved that he can match the rest of the formidable band in terms of musical skill. This is important, as the biggest draw to Hey Ocean!, besides Ashleigh Ball's captivating presence and singular voice, is the driving and diverse rhythms that compels shoulders to sway and feet to dance. Here's hoping the band will find that percussive match soon, if they have not already found it in this current drummer.

Hey Ocean! is coming to a city near you! Below are some upcoming tour dates, including a stint in the United States. (Playing with Joel Plaskett in Pop Montreal?! Nicely done! Stacked show.)

Le Cyc Art, Bike, Opera Touring Ontario and Quebec (Starting Tomorrow in Toronto)

Le Cyk will be playing at the Music Gallery tomorrow night. If you don't know what Le Cyk is Exclaim says it's "An interactive coupling of indie-rock and graphic art, Le Cyc, is an earnest, theatrical production, exploring social imbalances from a unique perspective"

In a longer version it's a coupling of 400 hand painted images by visual artist David Willekes which are meant to "artistically portray the emotive struggles of individuals who stand up against totalitarianism" and composer Eihab Boraie who constructed the score to Le Cyc on an ornate but out-of-tune piano. Both of these elements are brought together live (albeit with in-Tune instruments) in the shows, though there is apparently a limited edition DVD slated for the spring.

The show is running at the Music Gallery (197 John Street) in Toronto All Ages. Doors 8pm, Show 9pm Sharptomorrow night (Friday, Sept. 18) and

    Said the Whale Tour Dates

It's already been a big year for Said the Whale and their new album Islands Dissapear doesn't even come out until October 13.

In addition to a bunch of touring they've been nominated for the XM Verge Award for Artist of the Year for the second year in a row and a headlining spot on Parliament Hill for Canada Day. You may have also heard that Paris Hilton weighed in on the band. He said "“If The Killers and Badly Drawn Boy were to have a love child, it'd be Said The Whale.  Remember when "alternative" music used to be a real trendy word?  Well, that really is the best way to describe this band...Said The Whale makes delightfully quirky music.  It's infectious!” Just so you know, Perez Hilton doesn't, as far as I know, know anything about music. All he meant to say was that he liked them. Said the Whale doesn't sound like the Killers or Badly Drawn Boy nor do they sound like what was billed as "alternative" in the 90s. Said the Whale sounds like this:

    Go See Them:
Sept 24th – Victoria, BC – Element (Rifflandia Festival)

    Rah Rah Cross Canada Tour

What can I say about Rah Rah that hasn't already been said?
“Very accomplished despite their youth, Rah Rah plays immense, poetic rock tunes…” -Montreal Gazette

“There’s no doubt that Rah Rah are Canadian. Their beyond catchy but blunt rock songs were dressed with keyboards and violins, and in a very Weakerthans-esque manner they brought their awkward sing-along inducing live performance to a crowded audience at the Boat that couldn’t help but clap along! It leads me to believe in the near future we’ll be hearing a lot more from these prairie dwellers.” - Exclaim

“There's just something compelling about this band, whether it's Burns's earnest delivery (shades of a baritone Neil Young), the catchy tunes underpinned by rock solid musicianship, or the fact that one of their songs calls for a sound effect created by chewing candy into the microphone.” - ChartAttack

“I honestly don't know what to say about it beyond that it's really, really good, and it absolutely deserves to be heard by a wider audience.” - i(heart)music

"Going Steady’s a realistic, vivid lament on the frustrations of young love" - NOW
Only two things come to mind. 1) If you haven't checked out Rah Rah yet you are ripping yourself off for no good reason and 2) They do what is easly one of my top ten songs of the decade so far.

    Go see them here:
Sept 17th – Vancouver, BC – Wise Hall
Sept 18th – Kelowna, BC – The Habitat
Sept 20th – Calgary, AB – Broken City
Sept 23rd – Regina, SK – The Club

Sept 25th – Thunder Bay, ON – Black Pirate’s Pub

Win This: Library Voices, In Flight Safety, Julie Fader and Exclaim have a contest

It's a prize pack so good that it's not even one of NxEW's contests and I'm going to plug it anyway. Up for grabs in a contest presented by Exlaim!, Library Voices, In-Flight Safety and Julie Fader. The winner gets, for starters, a Gibson Les Paul Studio electric guitar plus copies of new CDs by all three bands and "a one-of-a-kind collaborative painting by the bands" and to top it all off you'll get postcards from the bands while they are out on tour.

To enter go check this page http://www.exclaim.ca/contests/ContestEntry.aspx?fid2=516!

In Flight Safety, Library Voices and Julie Fader all have some tour dates up, some overlap, some don't ... but as close as I can figure it it looks like this:

Ruby Jean and the Thoughtful Bees - Tour Dates and Remix Video

Rubekah Higgs alter ego Ruby Jean, along with her friends the Thoughtful Bees will be taking the show on the road one more time before winter sets in. It will be a quick two week swing that will take the band from Peterborough, Ontario to Victoria, BC. The dates are posted below but if you'd like to keep up with the tour and any changes or extra dates that may be added check out the Facdebook Event Page for the tour.

I also came across this when searching for nice media to include in the post. It is, accordint to the description:
"A remix of "You Don't Miss Me" by Ruby Jean and the Thoughtful Bees.
Video source is a 1928 short film by James Sibley Watson entitled "Fall of the House of Usher," based on the story by Edgar Allan Poe.
Produced and cut by Colin Bryson Crowell on July 15, 2008."
    It's very nice!
